Away from Elsewhere, but still Barking Gnarly May 24, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Odd couple is like a trip to the past. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse combine 50's pop rock with soul and create an original sound. The songs are just as well written, just as well produced, but the overall quality as a whole is not as breathtaking as St. Elsewhere. Even though the album doesn't quite measure up to the original, it is still a must-have for any Gnarls fan.
1. Charity Case- A This track is a perfect transition between the albums. It's jazzy, it's soulful, and it's well written. "Are you needing me like I'm needing you" Cee-Lo is a genius.
2. Who's gonna save my soul- A+ More of Danger Mouse. Although he is my favorite producer, he doesn't really make a huge spot in this album. This track however is a great example of Mouse's talent.
3. Going On- B Not my favorite. It's a decent song, but nothing special.
4. Run(I'm a Natural Disaster)- B- Out of all the songs on the album, I don't know why this is the single. It's not amazing production or vocals. Sometimes I just don't understand.
5. Would Be Killer- C weak production. Weak Chorus. It's ok but you won't think of this song when you think of this album.
6. Open Book- A Epic! Really different. I don't know where these guys come up with their material.
7. Whatever- A+ One of the best tracks on the cd. Such a great idea! It really inspires you to throw away your worries.
8. Suprise- A+ The 50's pop rock track. I love this song. The chorus is Fantastic!
9. No time Soon- A- Good song. Kinda sad. Sad songs are sometimes the best songs.
10. She Knows- C Sounds like an intermission. No chorus really. Not much of a song.
11. Blind Mary- A+ Such a great story! I thought all creativity in the world was lost, but these guys have magic.
12. Neighbors- A++ Best song on the CD. I love the singing throughout the whole song. You know you truly love a song when you want to hear every part and not just the chorus.
13. A little Better- B+ I usually hate exiting tracks. This one is quite appropriate.
If you enjoy the least bit of Gnarls Barkley, then pick up this album.
Fun, Poetic, Groovin' Music May 24, 2008 Gnarls Barkley has put out interesting soul/'70's funk/rock tunes that are groovy and catchy. He dives into a much darker subject matter with his lyrics than their previous release in 2006 of St. Elsewhere, but the songs still are amazing. The first single released is an extremely catchy tune called "Run (Natural Disaster)" with Cee-lo singing "Can you feel the pain" with a big background chorus. It also has Danger Mouse adding a nifty soul infused grind on "Would Be Killer", which starts off with the sound of the cock of a glock 9mm gun which adds a different touch.
Cee-lo's voice is the main focus and strength on the album's songs especially with the slower tracks like "Open Book" and "Who's Gonna Save My Soul". Then things speed up a tad toward the end of the album with "Blind Mary" and "A Little Better" adding more definition to the album. Gnarls Barkley is fun poetic groovin' music.
GNARLS BARKLEY keeps it coming!! May 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
St. Elsewhere pt. II, in my eyes The Odd Couple is another hit album for this group. St. Elsewhere took me a few listens to get into, but once the ball got rolling I fell in love with it, on the other hand The Odd Couple did the direct opposite as soon as the first track began to play my feet began to tap and they continued to do so thoughout the entire album its another hit and I hope they keep up the great work...A+++.

Great album - banish any 'sophomore' effort concerns May 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Familiar with both Mouse and Cee-lo's previous works, I checked out Elsewhere and was very impressed. The album was brilliant and even after hearing Crazy eleventy million times over that summer, even that song was still listenable and fun.
Upon hearing that their second album was coming out, I worried for a moment about the sophomore jinx and how it could effect what was originally a bit of a novelty group. I feared a cheap Crazy remake and some hit-and-miss tunes. Banish the thought. Even the single Run evokes Crazy in catchiness only, contrasting Crazy's off-beat drum line with a simple and quick tempo driven by a zippy high-hat and sing-alongs. But the real joys can be found with the rest of the album. This second effort mixes hip-hop-ish beats with jangly 50's pop song chimes and effects, layered over the top with occasionally playful, occasionally deep and introspective lyrics, molded into pleas, entreaties, and deadpans by Cee-lo's always intriguing vocal delivery.
The closest thing to a clunker for me is track 6, I just can't get with the beat (or lack of!). And not every musical foray by these two is going to work for everyone, but their moments of brilliance buy a lot of goodwill for the infrequent B- track that occasionally shows up. And for A+ tracks, Charity Case, Going On, and Surprise are all gems.
If you liked Elsewhere, do pick up this album as well. You won't be disappointed.
