A concept album about gigantic household appliances taking over the world? No such luck. As the images of Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Sun-era Elvis floating in the background might indicate, this Nashville band is strictly old school, singing about unemployed riverboat workers, covering Woody Guthrie and plucking banjos like there was no tomorrow. Produced by David Rawlings, Big Iron World boasts the expected barnstormers ("Cocaine Habit") and late-night meditations ("God's Got It") alongside a handful of folkie sing-a-longs ("Down Home Girl") and a thoroughly unexpected reference to Karl Rove. And where else are you going to hear songstress Gillian Welch banging away on the drums? --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Love it!!   June 2, 2008
I am an Old Crow Medicine Show fan from way back. This is a good one!!

3 out of 5 stars Simple, yet good...and a little disapointing   April 5, 2008
First of all, Big Iron Wolrd is a fun album to listen to.
Now for the bad news...It's not up to par with their live show.
That is pobably a problem for me since my first encounter with OCMS was at Bonnaroo 2007. It was a noon show and it was extremely energetic and fun, and the studio album does not capture the live energy on all tracks. However, this is the case with most studio albums, so the only reason I am partly disapointment is somewhat unfair. It is a fun album with some cool tracks. My Good Gal is a good song, so are Down Home Girl and Don't Ride That Horse. Generally it seems I like the slow songs more than the fast ones. For concllusion, I like the album, although their previous album might be better.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!   February 13, 2008
My husband and I caught them on Austin City Limits and were just blown away by their music.
This CD is excellent! I don't know how to classify it, but whatever it is, it's great to listen to.
I highly recommend this to people who like folk, old-timey music, blue grass and humor.

5 out of 5 stars It takes imagination   November 18, 2007

Some people today might think that bluegrass music is hokey and irrelevant. With some serious study of the lyrical elements involved, OCMS has made bluegrass not only contemporary, but essential. I don't even own this album yet, but after hearing several cuts via the internet and other forums, (as well as hearing them live at Bonnaroo in 07) I can safely say that this album is their best yet.

I realize that only a precious few can understand the joy of coasting down a gravel road at sunset, or setting a hook on a largemouth bass. Some may recognize the wonders and solitude of country. If you can, then this is your soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars This aging fanboy...   June 25, 2007

loves Old Crow Medicine Show, and this album is another winning entry! "I Hear Them All" is worth the price of admission by itself, but there are other choice bits; "Cocaine Habit" "Down Home Girl" and "My Good Gal" stand out, as well as the tongue-in-cheek (I think ;) "New Virginia Creeper".
