 Good sound, wack lyrics November 29, 2008

They have an interesting sound, which you can get a pretty good sense of in the previews on Amazon. However, their lyrics are lame. I think they cite among their rap influences Pharcyde and Outkast, but Knux is nowhere near as witty as either of them, although it's pretty obvious that their rapping is influenced by Outkast and also by Kanye. Other reviewers mention "Playboys" as a standout track, here's the chorus: "This one is for the playboys, there's some money to be made, there's some b*****s to be laid, hurry up I gotta get paid". Is this the best they could come up with, in 2008, to go along with their innovative sound? I'm really not feeling it. Maybe if I was at a bar, and they snuck a song in between some good music, and I couldn't hear the lyrics too clearly, I could get into it- but that's about it.

The Knux are either the new old or the old new in the rap world, and probably both. This sick album offers the newest hip hop sounds and an unironic love for the retro, mixing the two with a weirdness that is truly unique on the current scene. The key to the Knux sound is the live instruments, especially the electric guitar. Try to find anything in hip hop these days like the filthy sleaze-rock riff in "The List," the nearly metallic crunch of "Roxxanne," the skronky funk licks of "Bang! Bang!," or the new wave nervous guitar scratch of "Playboys." These fellas know what they're talking about when name-dropping rock nerds like Elvis Costello. Also, in a way that really reminds me of early 90s alt-hop pranksters like De La Soul, Knux can mix the nasty humor in their rhymes with occasional, and very effective, detours into serious drama like in "Shine Again" and "Life in a Cage."
The fellas are not afraid to show their many influences from hip hop, soul, funk, rock, and who knows what else, with the pinnacle of the Knux sound being the swingin' "Cappuccino" which mixes decades worth of multi-genre influences in ways that blow the similarly-inclined N.E.R.D. clear out of the water. Once in a while the rap world needs some weirdos to shake out the cobwebs and point the field in crazy new directions. This time it's the Knux - so get with `em. [~doomsdayer520~]

If this isn't what hip hop is all about, then what is. This is the best album this year by a landslide. The drums, guitar, vocals...it is all cleverly packaged into one glorious meal of hip hop gold. I hope these guys blow up and sell more albums than all main stream hip hop artists. If you like N.E.R.D and Outkast, you will definately be feelin' this album. Remind me in 3 days....hell, i will remind you right now to go get this album!

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard in hip hop. Now I love a wide range of music. I mean everything from The Stooges, The Stones, ACDC and the punk scene with all in between. Ive also been a big fan of hip hop since its conception and have watched it morph into disappointment over the last 10 years.I am a producer myself (Mike BMC) and have a few beats on the last 2 Solomon Childs albums. I am an avid music junkie with a wide open mind and I think my opinoin should be taken seriously when I tell you that these guys floored me. They have a style that is going to make heads spin. Listening to the recording sounds like something in between The Stooges Funhouse album and Outkast when Outkast isnt acting to weird. The fact that these cats play their own insturments is inspiring. It throws the argument right back in the face of people who said hip hop wasnt real music. Whatever. These guys are going to be huge. They are sick with creativity and seem to know that an album should have a "sound" and "feel" and they excecute that with confidence. Listen to Cappachino. Check out Playboys. Parkin Lot is just sick. I hope to work with them someday. Check loud.com and myspace for some beats guys. Fantastic music. Holler
