In the indie electronic realm, having a way with inclusiveness?the ability to blend disparate influences?is key. And if there's one thing Koushik Ghosh can do, it’s blend. His proper full-length solo debut (2005's Be With was a collection of his EPs) dips its toes into a variety of styles; think '60s psychedelia, mellow funk, and shoegazer textures with thick sides of reverb. Somehow it all goes down like fine wine?or maybe mushroom tea. There's an altered-mind haze to it, like early Spiritualized or Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, though its ambitions are greater than that. There is sober cleverness at the heart of Koushik's songwriting. The 16 tracks on Out My Window are full of surprises like the trip-hop beat that weaves its way into "Corner of Your Smile," or the jazzy noise of "Bright and Shining." It almost feels like a concept record at times with its short interludes (many of them, like "Forest Loop," unassailably lovely) and the consistency of its blissed-out, soft-focus tone. On the heels of Be With and after having contributed a couple tracks to Manitoba's equally dreamy Up In Flames back in 2003, the excellence of Window isn't a surprise. But Koushik surpasses those already high expectations here in a warm bath of hypnotic sound. Put on the headphones and soak it in. --Matthew Cooke

Product Description
Koushik specializes in making that hazy, hip-hop-based downbeat sh*t that you could easily compare to contemporaries such as Four Tet (who released Koushik's first single on his Text label), RJD2, and DJ Shadow. What sets Koushik apart from the others is a beautiful '60s psych-pop element that tends to pervade throughout. It shows itself in the spacious panned strings, acoustic guitars, and harpsichords that fall in and out of each other; and the beats have a harder regimented classic true school hip-hop sound, that Fourtet and Prefuse tend to stray away from. But what I truly love about this record is Koushik's voice. His singing is soft and mixed way down in the center of the track, sounding like the voice choirs you'd hear on one of those old Percy Faith or 101 Guitars from the late-'60s. If you're a fan of any of the aforementioned artists, you need this record. --OTHER MUSIC, NYC

4 out of 5 stars lush, mellow & innovative blend of rock, chillout and electronica   September 24, 2008

"Out My Window" is complex and innovative, but not in a distracting way as some more experimental electronic albums sometimes are. It is clear that a lot of time and thought has gone into this album, and I am very impressed by the maturity of the sound given that this is, as I understand, Koushik's first full-length.

The subdued nature of most of the songs is hides their complexity, and they survive repeated listens very well. Most songs work best as background music.

I can't say I like all tracks, but here are the ones I kept from this album: "Be with", "Lying in the sun", "Nothing's the same", and "In a green space".

4 out of 5 stars sunshine through the haze.......   August 21, 2008

After hearing 2005's "Be With" I have been anxiously engaged in waiting for a full length release form Koushik. The Canada native whose music sounds like a cross between label mate Mablid (Yesterdays New Quintet, Madvillian, Quasimoto) who admittedly inspires Koushik, The Beach Boys, and My Bloody Valentine, proves with 'Out My Window" that patience truly will achieve more than force. All warped and wrapped into one dusty package, the end result is a digital form of sunshine; the music radiating a joy and sentiment of a child-like innocence. Armed with dusty break-beats and folk guitars (as well as tons of other instrument samples, including horns and rhodes) Koushik creates an ambient funky-jazzy-pop-ish world, inhabited only by a few, if any. Where Koushik's vocal capabilities may fall short a times, the musical arrangements are more than sufficient for one's full listening attention. Hazy and alluring, "Out My Window" is one grand listening experience.
